Group work

Sometimes it is really helpful to work through our issues with a small group of people together who are able to share their experiences and work through issues together. The What Centre has a range of therapeutic groups, workshops as well as a youth club to support these. Please look at our What's on page to get exact dates of activities

NEW!! Support group for parents/carers of LGBTQ+ teens

We offer a parents/carers online support group, run by two therapists, on the last Tuesday of every month from 6-7pm. This service will offer group support to parents/carers of young people, this includes providing a space to share and explore their feelings, whilst developing skills that can support further understanding, healthier communication and improve relationships.

Breathe: 4-week anxiety management workshop

This short 4-week workshop uses fun, creative techniques to get some understanding around anxiety and how it works as well as useful tips on how to manage it. It is also a chance to meet other young people who are going through the same things and perhaps even learn from each other’s experiences. NOTE: CURRENTLY NOT RUNNING DUE TO COVID 19

Reset: 4-week anger management workshop

The Reset workshop is designed to help young people learn strategies to help manage your anger and build resilience in a confidential space. Learn why and how anger impacts young people through creative and artistic activities, fun games as well as learning from experiences of others who have gone through something similar. This small-group workshop may just be that little step to helping young become whomever they choose to be.NOTE: CURRENTLY NOT RUNNING DUE TO COVID 19

Level 2 group support/Steering group (BY INVITE ONLY)

A second level support group for young people who have already received support through the service and who feel like they may benefit from further peer support. Run by a senior counsellor, the group continues to look at ways to cope with different issues but also form the steering committee, helping to guide the service to improve and to advice on different support that maybe useful for young people.

LGBTQ+ support

We have a range of support for young people who identify as LGBTQ+ and would like to explore this or aspects of this. Please visit the LGBTQ+ page  for details on the full offer. We also have a 18+ offer for adults under our BeeHIVe project. Please see here for details.

Parent and Child Anxiety workshop

Unique support that looks at helping the family to work together to deal with and manage anxiety. The programme is designed to have young people and their parents/carers work together to identify ways of overcoming difficulties systemically. The workshop is an interactive session that focuses on:

  • Anxiety and its impact on the young person and their family
  • Self-help techniques that can be used with the family unit
  • Exploration of dynamics and relationships
  • Communication between young people and adults
  • Sharing experiences, views and thoughts with others going through a similar experience

Details on time and dates of the groups can be found here. To book on to any of our groups - please complete our referral form

You can help prevent a hate crime happening to someone else in your community and other communities, and you can help the Police better understand hate crime and improve their responses to it, including making arrests. If you do not feel comfortable contacting the Police directly, The What? Centre can do so on your behalf. We can keep your identity anonymous, or pass on your details.

The BAME Group can help you connect with like-minded people and provide you with a supportive network, give you a space to explore the unique challenges faced by BAME people and promote your well-being. The aim of this group will be exploring identity and self-acceptance. Please register to our first group session, which will then continue weekly.
